01:04:21
Hello.. I'm Mitchell from Malaysia. Just wondering, will you provide the slideshow as well?

01:05:21
Thanks for coming Mitchell

01:05:41
@Bianca, thanks for understanding

01:06:10
@Sarah, are there other tools you love

01:06:58
Here is the link to the paper where we firstly introduced the engagement framework: https://www.menti.com/zbki4up177

01:08:31
In the padlet, scroll across to Social engagement in the padlet and click on the image under the heading

01:08:49
were these elements linked to paper?

01:09:09
Thanks for sharing, Petrea. The link seems to get me to the menti meter survey though? Is there another link to the paper you could provide?

01:09:16
Take 2 for the paper: https://olj.onlinelearningconsortium.org/index.php/olj/article/view/1175

01:09:21
@Petrea these are the main two. Explain Everything used to be pretty good over the past 2 years the capabilities of things like Teams whiteboard is much better. Miro is also a good collaborative white board. Much of the rest of things I do is around preparing resources purposefully in the online space that is adaptable to software options and creating a sense of safe, collaborative community

01:09:27
Hi, the lnk to the paper is the Mentimeter link.

01:09:59

01:11:33
Different pathways is an important part of engagement in the online space

01:11:36
in some units

01:12:08
all forms of engagement take time. For social engagement, students introduce each other at the start and at each lesson I check in with them and discuss general topics that interest them before attending to content. Of course, all this takes time.

01:12:08
Agreed @Janice - setting expectations and defining the safe space

01:13:00
Flip grip is a good resource too

01:13:45
We use blackboard at JCU and it works well for collaboration

01:15:30
@Jagdeep I also love a dialogic class design

01:16:50
Using Voicethread or Padlet for a getting to know you activities and encourage video messages, not just posting but responding to posting

01:16:56
Emotional scales are good

01:17:27
that's great Diana to make it more relational based during that learning experience

01:17:45
I often play a nice piece of music or song before start of lesson to help them relax and check in to see any other music they like to hear

01:17:54
Content free course - awesome

01:18:20
I would love to hear about some strategies to get mature age, postgraduate students to engage. From my experience, they have very little time to spend online because of family and work commitments, they are less driven to build relationships with other students and they are sometimes less comfortable with online tools. Maybe others have other experiences

01:18:21
I'd like to hear more about a 'content-free course'

01:18:55
@Diana I agree with you on this. I too start each week's introduction by applauding the student achievement to have come this far and then introduce them to the content for next week.

01:19:48
@judith, I've found with mature students keep the tasks/questions relevant to either their workplace or the content e.g. how does the content look in the real world

01:20:22
https://piazza.com

01:20:33
with and from.....learning starts to move into collaborative engagement

01:20:51
@Sonya let's talk off line

01:21:25
nice to see you both

01:21:31
@Petrea, can I add myself to that content-free conversation? Thanks

01:21:43
@Luke, feel free to get in contact

01:22:17
For my mba class its great to relate their practice (work) to the material we are learning about. They have so many rich examples to use and share.

01:22:39
@Diana, yes, learning with and from peers is important also

01:24:19
Feel free to move to the sub-padlet for cognitive engagement. https://universityofsouthernq.padlet.org/alicebrown6/Cognitive_Engagement1

01:24:49
Its important to set the expectation for deep level cognitive engagement, eg letting them know what is expected in their posts - justification, reference, end with a question to keep discussion going, etc

01:24:54
https://universityofsouthernq.padlet.org/alicebrown6/Cognitive_Engagement1

01:26:46
Reflective journaling, incorporating feedback literacy processes and being explicit with the internal feedback processes of the student, modelling good internal feedback processes (and sharing them with the students). (I'm having computer issues, so can't currently'mic/vid).

01:30:20
hi I need to leave

01:30:33
Mind set is really important in framing how students approach activities

01:31:21
@Sarah-Jane I'm seeing the term mind sets used more often now in the literature and also in social spaces

01:32:27
Normalisation of particular behaviours, validation/reaffirmation & encouragement of acceptable behaviours, 'put yourself in a student' mindset to try and understand inappropriate behaviour and also clear consequences for inappropriate behaviour

01:32:43
https://universityofsouthernq.padlet.org/alicebrown6/Behavior_Engagement1

01:34:40
https://universityofsouthernq.padlet.org/alicebrown6/Behavior_Engagement1

01:38:04
@Sarah-Jane. I start feedback on assessments for PG mature aged students as well with 'great work getting that draft in for feedback' or ...'submitting the assessment on time. It was a big learning curve for many..." It helps in particular when the assignment is not very well done.

01:38:47
Soft skills cannot be developed at the program level unless they are embedded at the subject level

01:39:00
Really well articulated Sarah-Jane :)

01:39:29
'non technical' skills, Petrea for me. It definitely resonates with the individual practitioner not just at a program level. So, embedded in conversations throughout the course. I teach research courses so really important to talk about our responsibilities as critical consumers of research.

01:40:04
@Sonya that's excellent and I do similar. I also always use their name in feedback address

Can you harness emotional engagement in STEM??

01:46:57
@Alice yes of course you can

01:47:05
Memes/videos/music are very important especially if you are engaging with specially enabled students.

01:47:07
you are talking about priming
